The 5 Elements to Getting Out Of Your Own Way

So what is keeping you from having it all?

Where are you now?  Where do you want to be?  Since you are reading this, you recognize that you already know you have the ability to create your future.  You are ultimately the source of and cause of your success! You are the #1 key element to your success (and also for getting out of your own way).  I’d bet you also know that it takes your belief in what you are doing (element #2) and commitment to action (#3).  Pretty easy so far but then what is keeping you feeling stuck?  As a business consultant and coach I have worked with hundreds of business owners who struggle to take their dreams to the next level.  Everything seems hard and success feels out of reach.  So what are the remaining missing elements?  One of them is structure (#4).  Each of us use structure every day to get things done however we are not always aware that we have it in place.  Do you brush your teeth each morning, each evening, at lunch?  You actually put a structure in place which makes that happen, you might also think of this as a habit.  Having a successful business requires a structure and I often find that while a business owner knows their craft very well, even to the point of mastery, their business skills fail.  That is Element #5: learning and upgrading your business skills allows you to effortlessly do what needs to be done, every day, like knowing how to brush your teeth.

Now you know the 5 elements for success but how do you use them to get out of your own way? I have designed a little formula to help you.  If you are to be the cause of your success then write down the things that are relevant to you and where you want to take your business.  What future do you want?  Use this as a template to begin with.  After some practice, it will come more naturally but use it as your “go to” guide anytime things seem to get hard or out of reach:

C

Clarity What is the issue?  What are you struggling with?  Write down in about 5-10 words what is in your way.

A

Action What actions must be done to make things change?  Write down no more than 3 actions you will take.

U

Upgrade Do you need to upgrade any skills to support any of these actions?  Do you need to get help or take a class? Write it down.

S

Structure How will you hold yourself accountable? What structure will support your action items? Write it down. Also write it on your calendar and keep your appointments with yourself.

E

Emotion Are you committed to doing something about it? Do you have a “head” conversation or some perception about doing this that is sabotaging your efforts? Write down your conversation about it.

Key element #1 is you.  You have the power to do make change and create your future and it quite simply boils down to your commitment to do it.  Key element #2 is to clearly identify what it is you want and take action (#3) supported by the elements of structure (#4) and the necessary skills (#5).  Don’t try to do this in your head when you first start.  The process of writing it down allows you to see things in a whole new way.  You may begin to write down something and see that you don’t actually want it or believe it.  I believe that every business owner can create financial freedom but each of us gets to design what that actually looks like for ourselves.  By following these steps every time you want to make a change, you can take charge of your future and strengthen those skills which will help you to make changes any time you want.  The process will help you see more clearly and be more insightful as to what you want and what it will take for you to make it happen and then …. Get out of your own way because the future is yours!

One last point.  Do not allow learning to become an avoidance mechanism.  Continuing to upgrade your skills is necessary, but I have met too many business owners who spend their time seeking the next best tool they believe to be missing from their tool belt without doing any structure or action items.  Don’t delay – fast track a change that requires a skill upgrade by hiring someone who specializes in that area to help or train you.  Time is finite, money is not.  If you need marketing, social media, business skill training, or coaching, seek out those who already have the “know how” because knowledge without action will not help you take your business to the next level.

I am a business coach specializing in helping business owners who struggle with making enough money.  I provide coaching, business skill development, and money management systems that support profitability.  Fast tracking your future was never easier.
